Service projects in Latin America are conducted in close collaboration with partner agencies and host communities. AMIGOS International Office staff and partner agencies jointly determine the focus, location and size of the projects. Various factors are taken into consideration, such as volunteer and project staff safety and health, local community interest and participation, technical training, and the potential for successful outcomes for AMIGOS volunteers and community members.

Teams of two to four AMIGOS volunteers are assigned to host communities for up to eight weeks. Host communities open their homes and hearts to the volunteers, providing them the opportunity to form life-long friendships and increased multicultural understanding.

AMIGOS is accredited by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel.  AMIGOS is a member of the Independent Sector, InterAction, International Volunteer Programs Association, and Youth Service America.  Since 1977, AMIGOS has had a memorandum of understanding with the Pan American Health Organization.

In addition, within each host country, AMIGOS maintains strong local partnerships.
