Community Service

AMIGOS trains young people to meet the challenges of conducting community service programs with confidence and cultural sensitivity, both in their home communities and in Latin America. The skills gained through AMIGOS training strengthen volunteers’ abilities to conduct meaningful community service throughout their lifetimes.
Prior to their Latin America assignments, AMIGOS volunteers contribute to their home communities through service-learning projects. For example, they make home repairs in low-income neighborhoods, mentor school children and build community gardens.

In Latin America, volunteers live and work collaboratively with community members for up to eight weeks on projects such as:

·         Community health and education: child wellness, dental hygiene and disease prevention through construction of latrines and other home health improvements

·         Environment: community gardens, fuel-efficient stove construction and reforestation

·         Community-building: libraries, mural painting and other activities identified by local communities
